Dave, the "young pup", was introduced to the blues as a young child when his father gave him a cassette of Taj Mahal's "The Real Thing". This album remains one of his favorite. He bought his first guitar for $10 from his junior high music teacher, and before he even knew how to tune it, he had taught himself to play a basic 12-bar blues. Fortunately, he eventually learned how to tune his guitar, and by high school had been introduced to electric blues. At 16, he saved up and bought his first electric guitar: a Fender Telecaster. He and like-minded friends formed a series of garage bands that played covers of songs by the artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Allman Brothers, and, at Dave's insistence, Little Charlie and the Nightcats. In college, he became involved with KDVS radio, and produced the first episode of "Buried Alive in the Blues" in 2001. During his research for his radio show, Dave was introduced to the music of Freddie, B.B. and Albert King, Albert Collins, Peter Green, Mike Bloomfield, and many others. After college, Dave took a break from playing music until he discovered the Sacramento "Blues Jam" scene. Dave now has a whole fleet of guitars, but his main guitar is still the Telecaster he bought at 16. You can hear Dave host "Buried Alive in the Blues" on KDVS at 90.3 on the FM dial, Saturdays 6-9 AM. |
